Is Pulmonary Hypertension Reversible?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: 1. If you have been diagnosed with mild pulmonary hypertension (40 mmhg) and a ASD or PFO (can't tell which yet) - can the hypertension be reversed with closure of the hole or has the damage already been done?

2. If the damage has been done will the hypertension remain at the mild level or does it always progress?

Brief Answer:
Can prevent further progression.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to HCM forum.

In congenital heart diseases, pulmonary hypertension develops due to pulmonary vascular obstructive disease resulting from chronic vascular overload through the pulmonary vasculature. Once developed, this is irreversible (though symptoms can be treated with pulmonary antihypertensive drugs).
But, closure of the defect can prevent further progression by correction of the underlying hemodynamic disturbance.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
