Is Renal Failure During Lung Surgery A Cause For Concern?
Question: I had lung surgery in March, and the lung portion went fine, but apparently I had "renal failure" during the surgery, the blood flow stopped to my kidneys. Now I'm getting a BMT blood test for the kidneys. What exactly does this test tell the doctor and how concerned should I be. By the way, as a child I had problems with numerous kidney infections, as I got older it got better. Also, I'm a Type 2 Diabetic and take Metformin. When I first started taking Metformin, the pharmacist warned me, Metformin can be very hard on the kidneys. I just need to know how serious the "renal failure" during my lung surgery can be, plus my history with kidney problems and what exactly does the BMT test mean. Thank you.

Basic metabolic test tells us the values of your electrolytes , renal function and blood sugar.
The usual injury to the kidneys during any surgery is a pre renal one where kidneys would have failed either due to fall in blood pressure during the surgery or loss of blood. This type of injury is reversible and the kidney function goes back to normal on its own. Counfiuding factors like repeated urinary infection and diabetes can delay the process.
I recommend you to get a urine routine test done along with bmt tomorrow. Any protein loss in urine is a sign of onset of diabetic nephropathy which will need treatment.
Your pharmacist is wrong, metformin is not 'hard' on the kidneys. It is just that people with renal failure tend to have more acidosis because of metformin
