Is Running Risky When Diagnosed With Pancreatic Pseudocysts?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Feb 2016
Question: Well, I already have done it. A few months ago I was diagnosed with pseudocyst pancreatis as a result of a misdiagnosed acute pancreatitis which turned chronic now. Since I am a runner for decades, I don t know whether I could maintain this practice, even in a more moderate way. I cannot find any conclusive answer. My doctor says, better no. But running is very important for my overall psychological stability. Otherwise, I strictly obey all recommandations of my gastroentetrologist.

Brief Answer:
Yes , you can continue running. ..

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read carefully all your concerns and i can say as follows :
1.You are reporting to have pancreatic pseudocyst after pancreatitis.
I need to know more about the size of pseudo cysts? Please can you upload the abdominal Ct scan.
2 . You are asking if you can continue running even after your recent diagnosis.
Yes you can continue running, it is not condraindicated.
On the other hand it is important to know that abdominal trauma , hard exercises etc increase the
risk of pseudocyst ruptures.
This is why I asked you about the size of pseudocyst, the biggest pseudocysts has high risk to be ruptured than small pseudocyst.
3. I would also like to recommend to balance calories intake and calories burning during running.
The pancreatic enzymes deficiency after chronic pancreatitis decrease the absorbtion of carbohydrates and proteins.
Hope it was helpful to you!

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.
I am glad to hear that I can continue my running exercises.
I must add that I don t run too hard any more. Since I am almost 50 I am satisfied with up to 45-50' with a moderate pace each day, either on treadmill or in open.
I am aware of the fact that I must ballance my intake of calories due to the inhibited enzyme output of pancreas. But my doctor has ordered me to take pancreatic enzymes supplements, 25.000 i.u., 3 times a day after meals.
As far as Ct results, I had a MR and after that the EUS testing. The results showed a pseudocyst situated in the tail of the cyst, some 5x3,4 cm of measure.

Please follow...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back
You should be carefully about abdominal trauma especially on left side and back since your pseudocyst is located on the tail of pancreas.

With regards to calories balance , if you don't have diarrhea and you are taking 25000UI creon three time per day, than there is nothing to be worried.
If you will have malabsorbtion than you would have diarrhea.
Hope it was helpful to you!
