Question: I have developed several places in my arms and shoulders that are giving me sharp pain, concentrated in pin point spots. I do not have any noticeable weakness and while I exercise regularly, I haven't done anything to cause this. I take simvastatin and have for several years.

Brief Answer:
Need to rule out statin induced myositis

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Thank you for trusting us with your health concern

Muscle pain occurring in individuals who have been on statin for long period of time is concerning for statin-induced myositis, which is the inflammation of muscles. Serum creatine kinase level can help confirm/rule out the diagnosis. So, please be advised to follow up with your primary provider as soon as possible. And for the time being call your doctor and discuss with him/her regarding temporarily stopping simvastatin.
If myositis is confirmed, switching to a statin like pravastatin (which is safer for muscles) can help.

Hope this answers your question
