Is Slight Variation In The Albumin And Globulin Levels Within A Short Duration Worrisome?

Posted on Tue, 11 Dec 2018
Question: Concerned about decreasing albumin and increasing ghobulin levels. My albumins were steady 4.5-4.7mg/dl and ghobulin 2.4-2.7 in tests done october and december 2017. In Feb 2017 my levels of albumin were down to 4.0 and ghobulins up to 3.2. Still in normal range but concerned that an acute phase reaction might be doing this. My PCP seems unconcerned with change and believes this to be normal variability since all other blood tests were normal and no real symptoms. Concerned of big change in a few months. To be fair, tests were done in different labs

Brief Answer:

Nothing to worry. It is normal.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Your albumin and globulin levels are perfectly okay. There is nothing to worry about. That slight difference in the levels are due to laboratory variations and normal variations. Don't worry about that. Just relax.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.

Wish you very good health.

Hi Doctor,

I was concerned with degree of change in a short time. Is .5-.7/mg on albumin and .5.-8mg on Globulins normal without a significant underlying acute phase cause? I was also concerned that on every draw the A/G level was getting lower though I know still in normal range. Aside from some pretty intense stress and starting to take a SSRI I cant think of anything different.

Brief Answer:
It is absolutely normal.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It is very common that you have these types of variations. It is absolutely normal and common.

We have many patients with 0.5 to 0.8 gm variations in albumin and globulin levels and they are absolutely fine.

In mine opinion, it is not a cause for concern. 0.5 to 1.0 gm is normal variation for different labs also. Don't take to much stress with these figures. Just relax.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer.

Wish you very good health.

Thank you doctor, even with a decreasing A/G ratio it is not a cause for concern where albumin and globulin are moving farther apart from each other to the degree I described?

Brief Answer:
Not a cause for concern right now.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Don't worry above albumin and globulin. It is okay and still within normal range. No need to worry. Relax.

Just repeat your albumin and globulin level after 1 month.

Hope I have answered your question.

Wish you very good health.
