Is Steroid Shot Safe For Elderly Person With Post Polio Syndrome?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Is it safe for a 70 year old man with post polio syndrome to have steroid shots in his shoulder? He read somewhere that steroids may affect the axions and worsen the affect of polio. This shoulder was minimally affected by the polio. He has one completely paralyzed leg and the other is at 20% usage.

Brief Answer:
There is really no connection between steroid shots and impact post polio!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this worry. I know having lived with the consequences of polio for such a longtime, you are certainly not ready to take any further risk damaging any other structures.

Steroids are safe. The only fear is when this injection happens to be poorly administered therefore damaging a nerve. There is no special connection between this injection and polio specifically. Living and working in XXXXXXX with several polio victims, this has never been discussed and it is not a common observation for nerve damage in post polio patients.

I recommend you take this injection as recommended knowing that steroids all by itself is no additional risk given your polio state. However, let an experienced doctor do this to avoid damaging any vital structures in the process of doing so.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
