Is Stopping Of Dairy Products Advisable For A Child With Infantile Spasms?

Question: My 2 year and 2 month old boy is suffering from infantile spasms. As mostly he is "on the go" baby his occupational therapist recommended us to go for special diet which they say should be GLUTEN FREE diet. As one of my baby's genetics report clearly shows us that he is lactose tolerant so do we need to go for dairy free diet also or just gluten free is ok? As we have seen many doctors ask parents to stops milk also. Do we cut the intake of the same.?

Moreover we have seen changes in him since 3 months when we started to give him roti bread and Suji . He is becoming more hyper since then.

Brief Answer:
No need to go for dairy free diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Lactose free diet or gluten free diet do not have any specific role to play in the treatment of infantile spasms. If your child is showing any improvement with gluten free diet then you may continue it as advised. But to deprive him of lactose in spite being tolerant to it is not at all justified and not in good interest for his nutrition.

Evidence shows early diagnosis and treatment with ACTH, Vigabatrin or prednisolone may lead to better long-term outcomes. These outcomes are related to physical or mental development. For example, the child’s ability to learn may be affected. I would recommend you to discuss these options to your neurologist for better control of infantile spasms.

Early treatment may only slightly improve long-term outcomes. Outcomes may be more easily predicted when the cause of the disorder is not known.

It is important to weigh the possible benefits and risks of any given treatment with your treating pediatric neurologist.

Hopefully this will help you.
I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care
