Question: Hi,

My 3.5 month old son is diagnosed with hydronephrosis. We knew from the pregnancy that his left kidney is dilated but now the doctor has advised us to go for an immediate surgery. I have attached the history in the reports. Could you please help us to decide if he needs to go for surgery? Is it safe to operate at such a small age? What could be the potential side effects from it? Are there any medications to avoid surgery

Brief Answer:
operation is advisable

Detailed Answer:

Hi

Your child has PUJ Obstruction. This should be treated with surgery otherwise the concerned kidney will be damaged.

every operation has its own morbidity and problems. but the risk benefit goes in favour of operation.

It is a well established treatment and you can discuss the possible problems and their frequency with the treating surgeon.

There are no medications to treat it is a congenital malformation which has to be rectified surgically.

Any delay will lead to slow and study deterioration of the kidney function.

best wishes
