Is Surgery The Only Successful Treatment For Hyperparathyroidism?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: Is hyperparathyroidism only successfully treated with surgery? My primary care md. Informed me that my calcium and pth levels were very high and instead of referring me to an endocrinologist she was sending me to a surgeon. Is surgery always the only treatment.

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HCM forum.

Unlike most other endocrine conditions, hyperparathyroidism is primarily a surgical condition. The reason is that, this is caused by hyperfunctioning of parathyroid glands for which no antidots are available.
But,only a minority of cases will need surgical intervention, depending upon the degree of hypercalcemia, its effect on other systems(especially renal and cardiovascular) and clinical features. Most cases of asymptomatic or mild disease are managed by a watchful waiting.
These are usually managed by surgeons. But,endocrinologist also can manage the condition initially. If surgery is needed,he will refer you to surgeon.

Hope this will answer your query,
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
