Is Surgical Correction Required To Treat A Hammer Toe Issue?
Question: Hi. While in my teens I suffered from a traumatic break of my fibula and ankle which resulted in checkrein syndrome which caused a hammer toe problem with my 1st and 2nd toes. Corrective surgery was done shortly after the break to straighten out the big toe. This was done through freeing up tendons in ankle and lengthening the tendon associated with the large toe and pinning the toe, successfully. What remained and worsened over the years was my second toe in a hammer head position. I've consulted with a podiatrist who is recommending the tendon on the bottom of that toe be cut and the toe straightened with joints fused. I am just wondering if this is the best route. By severing the tendon will there be any negative consequences for a person who is athletic and very active. Would doing a similar procedure I had for my big toe be recommended. Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Surgical correction is the best way.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The correction of hammer toe the tendon needs to be lengthened. This needs to be cut to straighten the toe. The second toe of the foot does not bear much weight and is usually an inactive toe. This procedure will not affect your athletic activities. You need to consult an orthopedic surgeon and see if he can help you with reconstruction of the tendon.
I hope this answers your query.
