Question: My wife is 26 weeks pregnant. She is on folvite 5, evion 400, calcium, anofer sp (iron) and thyronorm 100. She had refractory vomiting, nausea, blotting, greenish loose stool and this couldnot be relieved with doxinate, omez, metrogyl. After she stopped taking iron tablet ( anofer sp) for 4 days all the symptoms were gone. She has taken iron tablet for last 3 months without miss and initial hb was 11.7. How long can she continue without taking iron, and will it be ok to take iron every alternate day?
Brief Answer:
go for injectable iron .
Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.
The symptoms you wife is having are due to gastric irritation due to anofer.
Most iron medications have this side effect. Constipation and bloating is also due to the same.
Iron medicine is required in pregnancy even though her Hemoglobin was normal. As pregnancy progresses the hemoglobin comes down.
At delivery if mother is anemic then she may have complication. She can try following methods.
Take iron on alternate days.
Take it with orange fruit. It improves absorbed iron and decreases bloating.
Improve iron rich foods in diet like green leafy veg.
If still symptoms recur then injectable iron like OROFER S OR IMAX S in 5-6 doses on alternate days can be given.
Please discuss with Your doctor regarding same
Write back if you have any queries.
