Posted on Thu, 19 Oct 2023
Question: My wife has lost her sense of taste. She has had a cold for two weeks, taking lots of
Dayquil and NyQuil, and took a Z-pack of (6) Azithromycin 250mg tabs. Do you have an opinion why she lost her sense of taste, and whether it is likely to return, and when? Can we do anything about it?

Brief Answer:
Lost of taste can be due to cold infection and also azithromicine use.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

My name is dr.Dorina Gurabardhi.

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

Loss of taste can be related to many causes but in your case I think that it can be a side effect of azithromicine.
It can also be influenced by the cold infection.
If this are the possible causes the taste will return back in two weeks.
During this time azithromicine will be eliminated from the system.

Some advices that I can give to you are :
-use nasal saline spray to relieve the nasal congestion
-use a humidifier at home
-be patient and continue the medications to treat the cold.

Hope my answer was helpful.
If you have any other questions I'll be glad to help.
Kind regards!
