Is There A Reason For Feeling Nauseous After Eating When I Am On Diabetes Medication?

It is very unlikely to be due to medications if you have been tolerating them well and no recent changes
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
Feeling nauseous can be caused by many causes and depending on how long you have this symptom or if you have other symptoms as well can lead to the likely diagnosis. Some medications can cause nausea also so knowing the name of the medications you take will help us understand if any of the medications you take is causing it.
Normally, if you are taking medications for a long time and you have been tolerating them well it is very unlikely that the nausea is due to the medications you are taking but please let us know which medications you are taking so we can tell for sure.
So to conclude, please let us know:
- since how long have you been nauseous and did you ever vomit?
- do you have other symptoms other than nausea (fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain)?
- which medications are you using, please specify the names, the dose and for how long?
- when was the last time you checked the blood pressure and the sugar levels and how were the values?
Please reply to this message with the requested information so we can help you more specifically with your request.
Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD

for diabetes, metformin 1000mg twice a day and glicipizide 20mg once a day
the metformin was an increase from 500mg twice a day to 1000mg twice a day and the symptoms began since the increase but not right away.
no vomiting so far. this has been happening for about 10days after meals.
Metformin dose change might be the cause, please see the detailed answer
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the reply and the extra information provided.
Some of the medications you are using may cause nausea and stomach irritation. Metformin also can cause some stomach discomfort and nausea with it. Having a dose change and the occurrence of the symptoms after the dose change might explain the reason why you are having the nausea. Especially not having other symptoms like diarrhea, fever or abdominal pain rules out more common causes of nausea like gastrointestinal infections. Glipizide and atorvastatine can also irritate the stomach and cause some nausea and the increase of one of the medications that irritates the stomach (metformin) may make the stomach sensitive to the rest of them as well.
I would advise you to:
1. See your doctor to make sure the nausea is related to metformin or any specific problem of the stomach. If metformin is seen as the likely cause after the examination than you will need to discuss on what adjustment have to be made so you have less stomach problems but good control of diabetes
2. Meanwhile make sure you take the metformin with food, this might help the stomach be less irritated due to the drug
3. you might also take some omeprazole 20 mg a day to help the stomach be less irritable
4. eating frequent small amount of food during the day will help with the nausea also
I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please feel free to reply in case more clarification is needed on this.
Kind regards,
