Is There A Risk Of Tendon Damage While On Cipro?
Unfortunately, there is still risk of tendon damage after Ciprofloxacin use
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,
Ciprofloxacin (as well as all quinolone group antibiotic) use increases the risk of tendon damage (tendonitis and tendon rupture). About 90% of tendonitis and tendon rupture occurs in Achills tendon (a tendon that stretches from the heel bone to the calf muscles) and 10% may occur in other tendons such biceps tendon.
More than 50% of tendon damage occurs during the treatment. But patients still remain at risk of tendon damage after the treatment for about 3 months.
Age over 60 year, obesity, renal failure, diabetes, previous tendon damage, hyperlipidemia and hyperparathyroidism increases the risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture in patients taking ciprofloxacin.
It is good that you did not have serious side effects of Ciprofloxacin during the treatment. Unfortunately, you are still at risk of tendon damage after the treatment. Please contact your doctor if you any time experience abrupt onset sharp pain or swelling at points where tendon attaches to bones. Early detection of tendinopathy and treatment prevents tendon damage.
Hope, this information is helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Sincerely.
