Question: Is there a way for men to detect hpv infection in throat? As from unprotected oral sex in the past and history of smoking, what should be done for testing if one has frequent strep throat?

Brief Answer:
Regarding oral HPV and cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

There's no test to detect asymptomatic HPV infection of throat. A doctor may suspect a lesion in oral mucosa as precancerous on examination and take a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. A persistent sore throat may also make a doctor to suspect throat cancer promoting examination of oral mucosa and looking for any suspicious lesions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

It's quiet pessimistic to know that hpv cannot be detected in men. Suppose that this unprotected oral sex happened 5 years ago with history of smoking tobacco and marijuana, would my body be able to clear it out if I just recently quit smoking entirely for the rest of my life ? ( just started quit smoking 3 weeks ago.) I know that I might be too late because most healthy people would clear it up within 2 years. What could I do in this situation? I have swollen lymph node under my chin and a swollen salivary gland at my jaw on the right side for almost a month of noticing. Today I just have a white spot on my right tonsil but no other symptom, just a bit of unusual feeling in my throat ( but no swallowing pain)

Brief Answer:
Kindly consult an ENT specialist

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Most of those infected with HPV are able to clear the infection within 2 years. Only very few continue to have infection and some of those may progress to cancer. Smoking itself is risk factor for oral cancer just as HPV is. Swollen lymph nodes are most commonly due to local causes like sore throat. I advice you to not jump on to sinister causes like cancer just because have a potential risk. I advice you to consult an oral physician/ ENT specialist and get your doubts cleared. This is the best you can do. Take care
