Brief Answer:
smoking can cause Hb to go high not alcohol

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

Most of the studies suggest that alcohol use is not associated with significant increase in Hb level rather it heavy alcohol use can cause anaemia and low Hb later on.

Smoking causes reduces oxygenation of blood due to lung damage. To compensate need of oxygen Hb level increases. It means higher the rate of cigarette smoking (more cigarettes per day) more lung problems and more Hb than that of the general population. This may lead to false negative finding and anaemia may be missed to be diagnosed in persons with smoking.

Only option to stop such problem is to quit smoking.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
