Usually bursitis takes a bit longer time to show up this way. In your case you were doing some running and then you noticed it the next day.

I would not be worried if it were a bursitis as it would not cause any problems unless it gets infected. Cancer is extremely rare in a bursitis.

I would wait for the scan to find out what exactly it is before making any decisions.

In the meanwhile do avoid any strenuous knee bending activity which can make it worse and keep your leg elevated if it’s getting painful.
