Brief Answer:
no effective medication as yet
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic
This condition is one of the most common age related
muscle disease seen in older persons.
It is associated with progressive inflammation of the muscles, with infiltration of the muscles.
In addition to the
muscle weakness in different aspects of the body, some persons may also have difficulty swallowing.
In terms of treatment options, at present, unfortunately there is no definitive effective treatment.
(1) high dose
steroids actually worsen strength while they decrease inflammation
(2)They are currently some studies being done to evaluate new therapies such as (a)arimoclomol- an initial study showed that this medication has promise in helping persons with this condition but further studies are needed to confirm this.
(b)studies are assessing the usefulness of a medication called etanercept
(3)alemtuzumab- initial studies showed that this slowed down the progression of the disease and also increased strength in some persons but again , further studies are to be done
(4)
gene therapy is also being evaluated
At present , these medications are still being evaluated and it would be some time before they are available for general use.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
