Is Thyronorm Necessary With Normal TSH Value?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: Hi,
My Wife was having high TSH value during pregnancy and we are advised to take thyronorm dose of 50mg everyday till the delivery. After delivery, our physician asked to continue the same for 6months and again check the TSH value. Recently we checked and it was well within the range at value 0.6. So, do we need to still continue taking thyronorm as our physician told to continue for life time? Because, for some ladies, due to harmone imbalances during pregnancy, TSH value might go high and come to normal after delivery as per some of the posts in this website. Please suggest if we need to continue taking thyronorm or not now?

Brief Answer:
Value normal with present dose
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Your wife's TSH value is normal with the intake of 50 micrograms of thyronorm. So she can continue the dose.
If TSH value comes below the normal range, it means the tablet dose is high for her. And at that time the dose adjustment is needed.
After pregnancy fluctuation in the thyroid hormonal levels can occur. For that thyroid profile should be repeated once in 6 to 8 weeks.
And if needed, dose should be adjusted accordingly with your doctor's advice.
Hope I have answered your query. I will be available to answer followup queries. If you are satisfied with the response, please give your review at the end of the discussion.
Take care.

Hi Dr,
Thanks for the reply. My question was whether to continue the Thyronorm intake even the TSH level has come to normal now. Because during pregnancy, TSH might have gone high due to harmone imbalances also.
Also, is there a deadline like when to stop thyronorm medication? Example: after 6months, 1year also if TSH is normal, can we stop? OR we should continue for lifetime medication?

Brief Answer:
Lifelong followup with or without medication
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
As I told previously, her TSH levels are normal because she is taking the drug. If she stops the drug, the level can increase again. We lower or stop the drugs when TSH levels falls. So, by doing regular thyroid profile, the levels should be monitored.
If her TSH levels comes below the normal range, it indicates that her tablet dosage is high and she needs adjustment of the dose / stopping the drugs.
Lifelong she may not need the same dose but she definitely needs monitoring the thyroid hormonal levels with frequent blood tests and adjustment of dosage.
In short we can consider lowering or stopping thyroid drugs when TSH levels falls. She has normal TSH value because of her current thyronorm dosage.
Take care.
