Is Tonic Water Or Normal Water Better?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Oct 2016
Question: On 9/14 creatinine reading of 1.9 from 9/16 of 1.8 and 8/25 2.1. I started taking IV saline solution at cancer center on 9/14. On 9/14 started Tonic water and regular bottle since I was told to drink plenty of water. Just wanted to know if tonic water is helpful vs. water? My next doctor's appointment 9/29. Doc cut my Revlimid to 15mg (1/2) dosage on 9/14 and not taking Zometa monthly shot since 8/17.

Brief Answer:
Plain water is always superior..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome to HCM,
I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

Please note that Plain Water is always superior to any other substitutes (eg. tonic water in this scenario as per your concern), simply because not only there's a significant amount of carbonated content but also quinine and several other preservatives and synthetic flavoring agents (which in long term can affect the kidney functioning too)..

So please remain hydrated by drinking a lot of plain water only..

Let me know if there's any further queries..

Wish you Good health..

Take Care
Kind Regards

What about the comparison of Tonic water verses IV? The negative impact of IV every two days is a little too much, if my creatinine .6 - 1.5
It takes 3-4 hours each doctor visit, plus roundtrip of travel of 3 hours.

Brief Answer:
follow-up consultation..

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX, Welcome back,
Thanks for following up with these details,

They can't be compared together simply because the mode and mechanism of action in parenteral (I.V.) and enteral (oral) is different (eg. Formula 1 car only be compared with a car but not with a airplane although both are vehicles, I hope you'll understand)..

However, you should note that tonic water should never to be considered as any choice of fluid replacement at all (first of all because it's not a standard regimen and secondly the harmful constituents are quite prone for causing renal damage)..

It's good to know that your Creatinine is within the normal range, means the therapy is working and the body is responding to it properly as well..

The answer is Water for enteral hydration and normal saline for parenteral fluid replacement which your doctor has rightly prescribed in this scenario (as already mentioned).. I understand the trouble that your going through every two days, but actually the benefit outweighs the risk in this scenario, so please stay well hydrated and yes, ensure to drink a lot of water..

If your visiting doctor's just for I.V fluid replacement therapy purpose, then you can simply talk to any nursing services to arrange for it at your home only (please discuss it with your doctor, i'm certain that he/she'll understand)..

Wish you Good health..

Take Care
Kind Regards
