Is Travelling Safe When Diagnosed With Hydrosalpinx In Left Tube?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Hi, I have just found out that I have an 8cm hydrosalpinx in my left tube. I am about to leave for a trip to Thailand on Tuesday and will not be covered for this under my medical travel insurance as it is considered to be an undiagnosed condition as I am unable to see an gyno until the new year. I have a couple of questions: 1. What is the likelihood of the tube bursting? 2. Could flying in an airplane (due to the pressure, altitude, etc) cause the hydrosalpinx to increase or increase my chances of the tube bursting?

Thanks so much!

Brief Answer:
Minimal risk of rupture

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I understand your health concerns but there is nothing to worry as hydrosalpinges rarely burst spontaneously and if at all they fo there is not much of inflammatory reaction to it as it has only simple fluid and no blood.
Air flight poses no extra risk of rupture to the hydrosalpinx so don't worry and enjoy your trip.
all the best.

Thank you for your quick response. I have read online that the fluid can be toxic and therefore a rupture could be detrimental to one's health. Wouldn't one's fallopian tube rupturing be an emergency health concern, regardless of the fluid it contains? Also, the hydrosalpinx was identified on an intravaginal ultrasound - if I were to have a small one in my right tube would it also have been identified here?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
no relation of rupture to flight

Detailed Answer:
Ultrasound can easily identify hydrosalpinx but hysterosalpingography is better in identifying the small ones.
Rupture will only cause mild discomfort and pain and usually tube has good distensibility and rupture occurs silently most of the times.
Air flight will not cause such an outcome and just leave your anxiety and pack up for your trip.
Take care

What about the tube twisting and cutting off blood supply to the ovary (I believe I am talking about torsion but I'm not sure if that is the right term). I was told at emerg that this is a risk. What is the likelihood of that happening? My understanding is that the hydrosalpinx I have is quite large. I am extremely hesitant to put myself in a situation where I will require surgery as I will not be covered under my health insurance for this and I am leery about having surgery in Thailand. What would the impact of the hydro be on my ability to have children if it does burst, or even if it does not?
Many thanks!

Sorry, one more question - my endometrium measured 1.3cm on my intravaginal ultrasound, which was performed on Day 7 of my cycle. Is this normal? From what I have read online this is quite thick. Could this be caused by infrequent ovulation due to my left side being blocked? Or could this be indicative of no ovulation on either side?
Thanks!

Brief Answer:
not an added risk

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, I understand all your queries and anxiety related to them
Hydrosalpinges rarely go torsion (less than 0.1%)
And if they do then blood supply of ovary is not an issue as ovary has a dual blood supply.
And if at all it ruptures then there is similar effect on fertility as is in intact hydrosalpinx (in both cases it reduces fertility to the same extent).

Endometrial thickness for day 7 is a lot high and most probably fallacious in observation.
Get it repeated in next cycle if needed.
I hope I have answered all the questions but in case you have any questions I will be happy to help.

If the observation were correct what would that mean? Thank you and sorry to keep asking questions

Brief Answer:
PCOD

Detailed Answer:
You are most welcome anytime.
Nothing much can be inferred from endometrial thickness only but this thickness if associated with polycystic ovaries can be an indication of probable problem in conception in near future.
