Is Treatment Required If A Toddler Has Swallowed A Glass Piece?
Question: Hi doctor,
My 1yr 4mon old daughter was playing in kitchen today. She got hold of a jam bottle which fell from her hand and broke. When I saw that, I took her to a side and started cleaning. Then I observed something in her mouth and found two pieces of glass there. I quickly took them out and let her spit 2-3 times. After which I gave her banana.
I am not sure if before I noticed, she would have already swallowed some glass pieces. Please advise.
Regards,

Brief Answer:
Visit the ER and get an X ray done
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. A piece of glass is a sharp object which could lead to bleeding inside the gastrointestinal tract. So, in case she ingests a piece of glass, I assume that she would not be active and playful and would present with some sort of problem. If any unaccounted or abnormal behaviour is observed it would be advisable to visit the ER at the earliest. If you wish to play safe you may take her to the ER and get her evaluated. An X ray might help in ruling out a foreign body like glass.
Let me know if I could help further.
