Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: Hi
My 6 year old fell in a straddle position from the floor of the swimming pool in to the water. She's had a bit of bleeding. It's been 3 hours now. We have applied ice pack. Should we see a doctor?

Brief Answer:
Look out for the ominous signs of head injury

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

I have gone through the details and understand your concerns. The main thing to worry is head injury. The signs to look out for, are:
* Unconsciousness or altered consciousness
* Vomiting
* Severe headache (some amount of headache should be acceptable)
* Convulsions

In case these signs are present, you should visit a doctor and get a CT scan of brain done. In case these are not present or if the injury is to parts other than head, you can wait and observe. Application of ice is the right thing to do. You can give paracetamol for pain relief. I hope that the bleeding has been controlled. In such a case, apply some antibiotic ointment. In case bleeding recurs, you should take her to a doctor.

She fell with her legs apart. So it is basically vaginal bleeding... not too severe.. but worrying all the same. Can we expect the bleeding to stop by itself with ice pack? Or is medication required. She is too scared to visit a hospital. Pleas advise. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
In such a case it is better to visit the emergency of a hospital

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

In case it is vaginal bleeding, I would suggest you to get her checked by a doctor. It is only after clinical examination that the requirement of medicines can be commented upon.

I understand that she is scared to visit the hospital. But your reassurance will help. I am sure that reassuring her would be no big deal. But your attitude matters.
