Is Walking Effective For Recovery From A Fracture?
Question: Hi Dr. Grief,
I recently returned home from hospital with a three fracture, nondisplaced pelvic injury from a ladder sliding out from under me. I was given a walker the second day in the hospital and have been using it, being told it's better to be mobile and move then sit/lie around. I'm a very active and energetic person, and am using the walker ALOT to move alot. My concern is over doing it and not allowing the bones enough rest. Could I be doing MORE damage by using the walker? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Walking is good for bones and fractures ususally
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for you question.
It would be good to know exactly where your fractures are in your pelvis.
As they are non-displaced and you have been encouraged to mobilize I suspect you are not at any risk of making them worse by mobilizing although this will cause you some discomfort to start with over the next few weeks until the fractures start to heal.
You can help the pain by taking regular analgesic medication and using your frame to share the load from your weight bearing.
Weight bearing is actually good for bones and fractures, keeping the bones strong and encouraging fractures to heal.
I hope this answers your question.
Best wishes
