Is Weaning Off Levera Advisable After Non-occurrence Of Seizures For 2 Years?
Question: Hello,
I was prone to seizures in the past. My last seizure was two years back and I have been on levera250 (One tablet every morning) medication everyday.
Please let me know if it would be feasible to start reducing the medication on a daily basis and eventually stop it.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
drug can be tapered slowly
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Usual protocol to stop anti epileptics is to start gradual tapering after 2-3 years of well controlled seizures.
The continuation is required in some epilepsy syndromes like juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (life long) and can be stopped or epilepsy go into remission in age related epilepsy.
Absence of neuroimaging abnormalities, normal eeg and absence of other seizure types put your disease into idiopathic generalised epilepsy.
You can gradually taper the dose to 125 mg for atlas 1 month , then 75 mg for 1 month and then stop.
Follow general rule in epilepsy that is to avoid sleep deprivation, night awakening and indulging in dangerous situations like swimming pool, open roof top, driving.
