Question: I’ve a sister who has been suffering from some kind of mind problem. She has been taking medicines for her mind illness but the thing is now that she takes medicine everyday and when she stops, she doesn’t feel like eating, doesn’t talk to anyone, cry sometimes, lie down most of the times and much more. She doesn’t even do any work when she stops taking medicines etc. She is very weak now as she doesn’t eat anything. Can you tell me what problem is this and can it be treated?

Brief Answer:
?Mixed AD Syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hi...
Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.
I am Dr. Ajeet XXXXXXX

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

As per symptoms you have narrated, she might be suffering from endogenous depression.

This is characterized by lack of appetite, weight loss, social withdrawal, mood swings, excess crying, irritability, lack or excess sleep, lack of drive, feeling of doom and sometimes suicidal tendencies.

As she is on medicines, she should not stop her medicines abruptly.
This causes an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and the symptoms reappear with an augmented intensity.

These drugs should always be taken under the supervision of a psychiatrist who slowly tapers down the drug doses according to the improvement in the symptoms and then stops them.

Usually, for the patients who had 3 or more than 3 episodes of major depression, these drugs might be continued life long.

Please visit her clinician, ensure good drug compliance and get her psychological counseling.
She should be encouraged to be physically active, have daily sun exposure daily, do meditation and have a nourishing diet including plenty of vegetables and fruits.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Further queries are most welcome.

Regards
