Question: I've awakened this morning with a very swollen left eyelid but no sign of a stye. I'm about to put warm compresses on it as if it were a stye but wonder if it could be something else. No previous problem like this...

Brief Answer:
bacterial or viral infection beneath left eyelid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query with attached photo image of eye.

* As per my surgical experience, the swelling of left eyelid suggest bacterial or viral
inflammation beneath the eyelid.

* My guidelines at present

- Thorough splashing of eye with cold water 5 minutes each every 2-3 hours.
- Ice pack application every 3-4 hours for 5 minutes each.
- Tablet ibuprofen ( 400 mg ) 3 times a day after meals if no history of drug sensitivity
preferably with antacid as ranitidine.
- Avoid direct sun exposure or atmosphere containing pollen.
- Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids.

* Follow up after 24 hours about the progress or early as per the requirement.

Wish you best recovery.
Regards.
