I’ve Been Clearing My Throat Now For Two Years And

default
Posted on Sun, 22 Mar 2020
Question: I’ve been clearing my throat now for two years and recently it feels like it’s gotten worse. I’m more stuffed up and when breathing. I’ve got discomfort (sometimes feels like I’m out of breath/over breathing) while just sitting. I’m now waking each morning with what appears to be a darker red strip around an inch thick down the centre of my tongue from the back to the tip. After I brush it goes away but I still have a fair amount of things that I can’t seem to remove when with a tongue scrapper. Sometimes I don’t clear my throat all day until night time, then others I’m doing from the min I wake. I’ve had an x-ray (all clear), docs listened to my chest (says it’s clear). He doesn’t offer much info (he’s the type of doc that doesn’t really tell you anything just saying “all clear” sends you home). I’ve using cough medicine (sometimes helps). I’m using throat sweets (sometimes helps). Sterimar spray (sometimes works, if I get it into the right place!). The constant clearing is also making my chest feel tension and pain from fatigue. I’m at a loose end and really want to get rid of this. I know I’m underweight, I’ve been underweight all my life, so that never seems to be an issue. Thought I’d mention it because it might be a concern when reading this. I appreciate any info or help anyone can offer (if even I long shot)

Brief Answer:
It can be due to chronic acid reflux.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query.
The symptoms you have mentioned likely to be due to chronic acid reflux which subsequently leads to irritation or inflammation of the throat and make you to clear the throat repeatedly. However other possibilities like chronic pharyngitis and sinusitis also be ruled out.
You can try the following measures for symptomatic relief.
You can take over the counter available antacids like omeprazole or pantoprazole for controlling acid secretion. You can take the pills one hour before the breakfast in the empty stomach.
Avoid spicy and acidic foods, restrict the use of alcohol and caffeine as it will worsen the symptoms.
You can elevate the head end of the bed slightly while sleeping.
As of now do warm saline gargles for symptomatic relief.
If symptoms persists you can consult an ENT specialist and plan for a throat swab.
Hope I have answered your query.
Thanks
