Question: I've been having a metallic taste in my mouth and not sure what's causing it. I have an injury on the back of my heel from a cart ramming into my heel. It bled. I cleaned it and put Neosporin on it and a bandaid. It's a good week later and it's still not heeling but was looking infected. Doc put me on Keflex for a week. It's now gone, heel still bothering me. I wonder if there is a correlation between that and taste in my mouth. I also use albuterol inhaler and other medicines, but I'm not sure what kind causes this symptom.

Brief Answer:
common side effect of Keflex antibiotic. wares off within some days.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor services.
I have read your query and here is my advise.

* As per my clinical experience, the metallic taste in mouth is due to
common side effect with consumption of Keflex ( Cephalosporin group of
antibiotic ) given for healing of heel wound.
Mechanism is via alteration in taste buds at microscopic level which
usually turn out normal within some days.

Guidelines for better recovery

- Gargles with peppermint added water 3 times a day.
- Keeping ginger in mouth 2 times a day for 5 minutes each.
- Avoid to consume spices in diet.
- Drink plenty of liquids and avoid constipation.

* Practically this issue does not require any medications, but further
antibiotics can prolong the issue for sure.

Wish you best recovery.
Thank you.

Regards.
