I've Had The Mirena Iud For Almost Two Years Now

Posted on Wed, 20 Feb 2019
Question: I've had the mirena iud for almost two years now and it works great so far. I am currently on day four of on and off breakthrough bleeding which isn't normal for me. I didn't think my period should show up until next week sometime. I haven't been getting normal periods every month for almost the last year though so I'm not sure where I am exactly in my cycle but I've been bloated, cramping and a little nauseous too. the last time I was with someone was January 26. Do I need to be worried about it being implant bleeding or is it my period early? I've checked my strings a couple times and they are fine. I know there is still a chance of pregnancy with the mirena.

the only thing that came back was the brief answer and it was "probably". There wasn't any other details with that. So probably it was an early period or probably it was implant bleeding? my period I think should have showed up within the next five to seven days.

Brief Answer:
The bleeding can be a sign of menstruation, the chances of pregnancy are low

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I am sorry that the answer was not complete.

Mirena works by preventing the egg implanting by thickening cervical mucus.

So, the chances of getting pregnant while having Mirena are very low.

The fact that you haven't got normal periods for a year mean that you didn't ovulate during this period.

So, in my opinion the bleeding can be related to menstruation.

Based on the fact that there is a low chance of pregnancy, I suggest you to do a urine pregnancy test to exclude this possibility.

Feel free to contact me again for further clarification.

Take care dear,

I did a pregnancy test and it came back negative. I did have some bleeding earlier this month a couple days. I think it was between the 7 and 11. so there would be a chance of ovulation this month, sorry I get them so rarely I sometimes forget. that would just make my cycle a little shorter than 28 days this month. if I take another pregnancy test Friday and it comes back negative is that far enough away from the 26 that it would show a positive if I was pregnant or should I wait till next week sometime to test again? thanks!

Brief Answer:
I recommend to do another pregnancy test next week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

The bleeding is probably due to menstruation.

To be sure I would recommend to do another pregnancy test next week.

The pregnancy test should be done one or two weeks after intercourse for better results.

So, I would recommend to do another pregnancy test around the date 9 of February.

Feel free to contact me again for further clarification.

Take care dear,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi
