I’ve Never Known Myself To Be Diabetic. But I Get

Question: I’ve never known myself to be diabetic. But I get random spikes only some times. Like last night I drank a sugary Red Bull and my sugar only went to 105. Then this morning I ate a bowl of sweet cereal and it spiked to 240. In fact I might check it 5 times a day for 3 days and it will never be above 130-140 after meals. Then all the sudden I’ll get a huge spike randomly. What’s the deal?

Brief Answer:
You may have glucose intolerance

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using 'Ask a Doctor'. What you may be showing the early signs of is glucose intolerance, which is when your body cannot handle large sugar loads, and so you blood glucose spikes like this. At other times, you body may be able to handle it for whatever reason, and so your blood glucose stays controlled. But a blood sugar getting as high as 240 is certainly abnormal, and so I would suggest getting a Hemoglobin A1c test done, which will show what your blood sugar average is over 3 months, and this will give a better idea of whether you have glucose intolerance or not.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
