Just Got Notified Yesterday That My GP Has Closed Her
Question: Just got notified yesterday that my GP has closed her practice! Two days ago I felt an itch in the area where the tongue and tonsil meet. Today it felt a little swollen in that area. I looked with a lighted mirror and saw a small pus pocket there. I don't have a sore throat (just post nasal drip) and I don't feel ill. I have a very busy weekend ahead and don't want to get sicker. I do have a full prescription of Amoxicillin I was given after New Years (Dec 30 I had an upper endoscopy and had fluid in my lung and literally couldn't get anyone on the phone; by the time they called me back, three days later, the fluid had mostly cleared.). Should I take the Amoxicillin? (I hate going to Urgent Care because I have to take my son with me and he has advanced DMD and I don't want to expose him to everything.)
Brief Answer:
Probably tonsillitis, follow the advice below.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I understand your concern.
Your symptoms seem to be related to tonsillitis.
The fact that you see a pus pocket is related to a bacterial infection.
So, I recommend to start a cycle of Amoxicillin 500 mg twice a day for five days.
In case of pain you can use Acetominophen 500 mg three tablets a day.
I also recommend to use a treat spray with antibacterial properties.
I also suggest to drink liquids and gargle with salty water.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
