Question: Lately of the course of the last month my resting heart rate has slipped to most around 53-55 which is not abnormal for me but when I lay down or am sleeping I’m in the forties. I’m only 35 and in average shape...quit smoking after 15 years two years ago. When is it time to be concerned?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Hope I can be of help for you today. The heart can beat too slowly if the electrical signals don't start often enough. Having a slow heartbeat doesn’t always cause problems. You may still be healthy even if you have slow heartbeat. For example, it is common for athletes to have a slow heartbeat. It is also common for people to have a slower heartbeat when you are sleeping. According to your history information you do not take any medicine that causes a decreased heart rate. There are also conditions or problems that are related to your heart rate low such as: a heart attack, certain infections, sleep apnea, anorexia etc. Did you see a doctor about it already? To see if your heartbeat is slower than normal, your doctor will do an ECG(electrocardiogram) and heart ultrasound. Your doctor also needs to do a blood test.

I hope that It can help you, and please let me know if you have any clarification or question about that, and I would be welcome to discuss it with you further. I hope you have good health.

Best regards,
