Question: Looking for some answers , I’m under investigation for tachycardia/ blood pressure currently taking bisoprolol 2.5mg , for now they have ruled out cardiac issue and and now have me seeing and endocrinologist to rule out rarer causes , I’ve recently started suffering with constant indigestion/ heartburn / nausea , Bad burning throat , as if acid is coming up , I feel this has got steadyly worse since starting the bisoprolol , I’ve read that beater blockers can slow down digestion, but the pharmacist I spoke to is adamant this won’t be the cause
Is this a possibility do you think and if so is there any alternate? As they’ve now gave me lansoprazole 15mg to take
Thanks

Brief Answer:
It can cause GI upset unrelated to beta blockade

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You seem to have developed gastroesophageal reflux. Beta blockers like bisoprolol can cause gastro-intestinal upset, though its unrelated to beta blockade. These medicines should be avoided if possible. In fact only way to confirm this is to withdraw your medicines (while monitoring your BP regularly) and see if your symptoms improves within a week or so.

Medicines that can cause or aggravate GERD are pain-killers, potassium supplements, bisphosphonates, beta blockers, theophylline, asthma medicines and calcium-channel blockers.

You can try ACEI or ARBs. But these also have been suggested to cause heart burn in some people. So we need to approach your case by trial and error method. Try the medicine and see if GERD gets worse.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
