Question: Male 74. Have had hypertension 8 yrs. controlled. Went to E.R. for back pain. Had a cat scan. The report said, "Heart murmur --- ""pulmonary arteries demonstrate mild central enlargement, consistent with mild pulmonary hypertension. Neither the E.R. doctor or my own doctor (who saw the report) seemed overly concerned. Sometime when I exert myself (mowing the yard, etc.) I get a mild ""stinging"" across my chest which stops when I stop and cool off. Is that ""mild sting"" because of the ""central enlargement"" the report said??? I FEEL ABSOLUTELY GREAT. NO pain, no chest discomfort, numbness, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, etc. etc. Just curious

Hello!

Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that it is important to investigate for the possible cause underlying the pulmonary artery enlargement.

Is it caused by a chronic pulmonary disease (pulmonary arterial vessels, pulmonary tissue, bronchial tree), or chronic heart failure is the reason?

Coming to this point, I would recommend discussing with your doctor on the possibility of performing additional tests like cardiac ultrasound, pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gas analysis.

Pulmonary hypertension could be reliably estimated by means of cardiac ultrasound.

You shouldn't worry about that stinging sensation, just discuss with your doctor to further investigate your clinical conditions.

In case of any further questions, feel free to ask me again.

Kind regards,
