Question: Mardi is my name. I’m 61, think I have food poisoning (earlier I had severe stomach and intestinal pain, cold sweats, dizziness, was lightheaded, and vomiting), which came on suddenly. Now I have diarrhea, but with fresh blood, not old blood. As of right now, I don’t feel very well, but I’m not in pain. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Shigella possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I think you are suffering from a gastrointestinal infection. Since you have blood in stools and and you think that may be caused by contaminated food there is a possibility of you having shigella.
You may need to do a stool sample to check for it.
Probably antibiotics are needed.
You should keep yourself hydrated, drinking lots of fluids and water. You can also find otc rehydration solutions and your symptoms will improve.
Don't use drugs that treat diahorrea such loperamide.

Hope I have answered the question.

Thank you for your reply. I just went to bathroom again, and like last time, there was quite a bit of blood. There wasn’t a lot of diarrhea, but blood. I did snap pictures if I should send them since I know my description is relative.

Also, how would a person get an intestinal infection. It definitely feels like it could be what’s going on.

Thank you again.
