Mother Is Age 94. She Has Been Having Bouts Of
Question: Mother is age 94. She has been having bouts of diarrhea or loose stools in the last 2 months. For irritation we see around the anal- cheek area we have been using zinc oxide. A few days ago she has developed raw and crusty area of pain where the cheeks meet at the anal area... not on the XXXXXXX itself.....about 2 inches long either side... we started using Vasaline petroleum jelly on the painfull area to help the pain and avoid dryness. We are trying to keep the diarrhea under control with Imodium liquid . BUT my question is
What should we use on the raw and crusty sore near the cheek- anal area to help it heal?? It’s painful for my mother . Should I keep using the zinc oxide ?? Or the gasoline? Or what bout an anti biotic ointment like Polysporin??

The redraw area in the perianal region could be either a manifestation of Irritant Contact Dermatitis Or it could be related to underlying Zinc Deficiency - Acquired Acrodermatitis Enteropathica, particularly seen in old age. I suggest you give her an oral Zinc supplement (around 50mg elemental zinc per day) for a few days. In addition, I suggest you apply a topical steroid-antibiotic combination cream e.g cortisone and polysporin ointment mixed together or at separate times of the day.

Diarrhoea is also a feature of Ecrodermatitis Enteropathica apart from the periorificial rash. So I think Zinc supplementation should really help her.
