Question: My 18 yr old daughter went to a concert where she screamed her brains out. She woke the next morning with throat irritation - no XXXXXXX But this was over 2 weeks ago, and she continues to cough, have throat irritation, and phlegm. She is moving into dorms in her new college in 5 days, and we'd like her to be healthy. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
This may be bacterial so she probably needs some antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
HI and Welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service. Thanks for asking.
I have read your question and here is my advice.

A sore throat is common and mostly not serious. It is caused very often by a viral infection. However, this may be caused sometimes by bacteria which should not be missed as that needs specific antibiotics too.

Viral is common and most do not need treatment however it most of the times resolves in about a week and we always think of bacterial one if it extends after 5 days. As your daughter has these symptoms for 2 weeks we need to think about bacterial throat infection. Phlegm production is also suggestive of a bacterial throat infection.

So probably this is a time she should be seen by her GP as she may need some antibiotics for this.

Another possibility is allergic pharyngitis which may also be prolonged and may need some anti-allergic.

So, I understand that until she does not have any shortness of breath, it isn't serious but its surely time that her doctor should now see her find and treat if any bacterial infection is there.

Hopes this help you understand your query. Let me know if you have any further questions about it. I would be glad to answer.

Kind regards
Dr Rahman
