Question: My 2 MONTH old daughter is not passing stool from 37th day.She is 70 days old now. Meconium was passed 38 hrs post birth without stimulation. We started Duphalac syp. 3ml twice a day, didnt work at all. Only Dulcolax suppositories are helpful so far( once in 5-6days). She passes a lot of gas (Shows discomfort) and passes Urine without any problem.
X-ray BARIUM ENEMA (normal /contrast) reports are normal. TSH is normal.
Birth wt is 2.8kg. Present wt is 4.2kg(Breastfeeding). Till 37th day she urinated more than 10 times atleast and passed stool twice fully. She is a full term baby but we choose C-section (as my 1st delivery was C-section with no complications). What could be the treatment for this condition?

Brief Answer:
I need some more information please

Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern.
She has doubled the birth weight which is an excellent prove that she is not having anything major.
She is feeding well which is again a pointer that the baby is healthy.
She does not vomit every feed.
Her thyroid status appears to be normal and even the barium enema is normal which almost rules out Hirschsprung's Disease.

1. Do you mean that she is passing flatus but she is not passing stools?
2. She has not passed even a speck of motion or do you mean that her passing is difficult?
3. Can you upload here if you have any of her reports in hand?
4. Is there any family history of constipation?

My daughter is very fussy during feeding and after due to flatulence. No vomiting at all so far. 1. She is passing flatulence after every feed. There are traces of motion on diapers coming our with gas, when Duphalac was given but not otherwise. 2. Not passing any stool at all on her own unless Dulcolax suppositories are used periodically. The stool she passes after Dulcolax is not hard but Creamy paste texture like. 3. Uploading the X-ray report FYI. 4. No family history of constipation.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on constipation

Detailed Answer:
Hello... I understand your concern.

Please be rest assured that this is a completely physiological issue and nothing related to constipation at all.

Babies of this age until 6 months of age (either breastfeed or formula fed) usually how some discrepancies in the bowel movements.

They can pass motion 10 times per day or 10 days once also.

As long as the baby is feeding well, urinating at least 4 times per day, is active otherwise and smiling - you need not worry at all about this particular pattern of stools.

You need to worry only when there are symptoms like -

1. Not passed motion consistently for 10 days.
2. Abdomen is distended and tight.
3. Vomiting consistently or green colored or bilious vomiting.
4. Not passing flatus for 7 to 10 days.
5. Refusal of feeds.
6. Decrease urine output and the baby not being active.

Thanks doctor. The symptoms 1, 2 , 5 and 6 are prevalent at present. Due to this problem baby feeding time is reduced considerably and she is sleeping for long hours. Urine output is reduced as well. With Dulcolax instant motion occurs. Could this be an Intestinal issue or Nerve growth related ?

Detailed Answer:
I suspected Hirschsprung's disease - but the Barium enema being completely normal is the red herring here.
But if the baby's weight gain is appropriate - it should not be anything serious.
As soon as the baby is 6 months old - start giving her papaya (best natural laxative) along with water and this problem should get solved.
If not the gold standard test to rule out nerve problem is - a rectal biopsy.
