Brief Answer:
Rule out refractive errors first

Detailed Answer:
Hello Rangoli
Welcome to Ask A Doctor service

I have gone through your query and understand your concern

In this scenario, two things I would like to rule out- firstly and most importantly, we have to rule out refractive errors, as it is common, easy to detect and can be corrected with spectacles.

Secondly, minor squinting or mal-alignment of eye balls can also cause this, even though less likely.

So kindly get these two things excluded first with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

I hope this answer will help

We went for his eye test but the doctor said he is too small to get the test done. Cannot figure out the refractive error if any at this stage.

Brief Answer:
Cycloplegic refraction testing can be done

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Sorry for the delay.

There are two options for testing refractive power of eyes:

1. Objective testing with visual chart(using numbers in older children and pictures/shapes in smaller children). The minimum age for this testing is 2.5-3 years. This is more accurate.

2. Cycloplegic refraction(Refraction testing after dilatation): Here pupils are dilated using eye drops, and refraction is assessed by examining through a lens. This can be done even in infants. But this need to be done by an experienced ophthalmologist in a hospital setup. This is difficult in an office practice.

So I would suggest you take him to a tertiary eye centre, where the said facility is available. Examining children needs a lot of patience, time and expertise.

Meanwhile, you can try to adjust the distance at which he watches TV and see whether there is any improvement- just a trial and error method.

I hope this answer will help
