, Throat continues to get worse, should we just wait
You can just wait
Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Assuming he has had this sore throat for less than a week, it sounds like it probably is being caused by a virus, and he can safely wait for it to get better. I think you are doing all the right things with the tea and water salt rinses. He can also take an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen and that can sometimes help a lot.
If the pain gets very severe to where he is having a hard time swallowing, the only other option would be to take a dose of steroids to reduce the inflammation, but I would only recommend that if the pain is very severe.
If the sore throat persists beyond a week or so, I would suggest getting tested for other causes of sore throat, such as other bacteria, or for mono. But hopefully this will improve in the next few days and that will not be necessary.
I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions about that and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
