My 23 Month Old Daughter Is Passing Loose Motions Around
Question: My 23 month old daughter is passing loose motions around 3-4 times in day, it is not completely watery but it is little loose than semi solid. Once of twice in a day she is passing normal semi solid stools also. The colour is normal yellow.
A week back she was passing loose stools more frequently but the frequency has reduced after giving oflomac syrup 4ml-0-4ml for 4 days. We also gave her Econorm sachets. This was based on the advise of a pediatrician over phone.
Her body temperature is normal and she is completely active and eating well.

Thanks for writing to us.
Usually loose stools at this age is viral or toxin mediated. If there is no blood in stools usually antibiotics are not required. I usually do not prescribe antibiotics like oflamac for such kids in my clinic if there is no blood in stools.
Econorm is a prebiotic, which can be safely given.
My tips
1. Wait for a few more days, it will settle on its own, as your child is otherwise active and taking orally well.
2. You may continue Econorm for a couple of days.
3. Zinc at 10mg per day is necessary as per WHO guidelines for at least 14 days.
4. Ors can be given in sips to keep hydrated.
If baby becomes dull, poor intake, poor urine output less than 6 times a day, consult nearby doctor or hospital.
