Question: My 34 year old son has had sporadic upper abdominal pain he describes as a huge gas bubble. The pain lasts for hours until he can belch or pass gas. He says he moves his bowels daily, but only a small amount. I worry about a partial bowel obstruction

Brief Answer:
Could be chronic gastritis and disturbed intestinal flora.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to Ask a Doctor service.

I have studied the problem carefully.

It is difficult to diagnose a condition based purely on the symptoms, a physical examination and requisite investigations will most certainly help.

However, such complaints are usually indicative of gastric irritation and an imbalance in the intestinal flora.

Your son should get himself evaluated properly by a gastroenterologist once to rule out the possibility of any serious issue.

Apart from that, he should take a course of probiotics or yogurt in moderate amounts.

He can take Omeprazole (prilosec) or pantoprazole along with antacids like muciane gel or gas X.

If the symptoms persist even after a 10 day course of this medication, your son will require an upper GI endoscopy and testing for H. Pylori infection.

I hope this information will be use to you.

My best wishes to you and your son.
