Question: My 5 year old is having recurrent headaches at the front of her head above her nose/eyebrows. Never first thing in the morning, always later in the day, sometimes during exercise. She drinks and sleeps plenty. They come and go and never last more than a minute- quite fleeting

Probably sinusitis, follow the advice below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms of your daughter seem to be related to sinusitis.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses.

It is usually caused by a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract.

I suggest giving her Tylenol for the pain.

I also recommend using a nasal spray in case of nasal congestion.

In case the symptoms continue, I suggest doing an X-ray of the para-nasal sinuses to for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Obviously I am concerned this could be the symptom of something much more serious- like a brain tumour.
What would her headaches be like if this were a concern?

Also I have kept a diary for over a month but I first noticed this headAches on and off in January and as so irregular thought it was perhaps dehydration.
Sinusitis wouldn’t she have a runny nose?

Online it suggests sinusitis is a short teen thing lasting around 10-14 days yet these headaches have been happening a lot longer

Brief Answer:
Follow up query explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

I understand your concern.

Acute sinusitis last for 10-14 days and is accompanied by running nose.

Based on the fact that the symptoms of your child have lasted longer it can be chronic sinusitis.

An x-ray of the sinuses is needed to confirm the diagnosis.

I also recommended a complete blood count to check for any infection.

If we don't find anything through this examinations, we may ask for an MRI to exclude the possibility of a brain tumor.

There are many medical conditions that can cause headache so you should stay calm and not be worried.

I suggest to give your child a healthy diet and a lot of liquids.

Feel free to contact me again for further clarification.

Take care dear,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi

Ok thank you, I will ask the GP for bloods.

Can you tell me though, is this type of headache (late in the day, quick fleeting front of head) a common brain tumour symptom? She has no other symptoms except she is a little congested.

Brief Answer:
Follow up query explained below in detail.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

The location of the headache and the fact that she is a little congested can be related to sinusitis.

This type of headache is not common for brain tumors.

But, to exclude completely the brain timer I recommend doing an MRI.

Meanwhile, I suggest to give her liquids and use a humidifier at home to help with the congestion.

Hope my answer was helpful.

Kind regards!

It’s not as easy as that in the UK to get an MRI, they would need to really believe it’s a possibility.
I’ve noticed that if she is upset (crying) or angry (shouting) this can trigger a short headache- not make one worse but being one on. What does this suggest?

Brief Answer:
These symptoms indicate a tension-type headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

The headache after crying or shouting may indicate a tension-type headache.

In this case, you can use Tylenol to relieve the headache.

No other treatment is required.

I may recommend doing an X-ray of the sinuses to confirm or exclude sinusitis.

Without the examinations is very difficult to precisely confirm the diagnosis.

Take care,

Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi

No of course I do understand, I have an appointment next week.

She today has regurgitated a small amount of food once am and once pm- NOT vomiting and no nausea. Would you think this is another symptom or separate. She’s never done this before
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi (3 hours later)
Brief Answer:
In my opinion the regurgitation is not related to the headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again dear,

In my opinion the regurgitation is not related to the headache.

It is a separate symptom, so you should not be worried.

I suggest to give a small amount of food frequently and give liquids.

Take care dear,
