Question: My 54 husband (in great shape, exercises, runs, weighs 157 lbs, non-smoker, non-drinker, non-drug use) was given meloxicam a few months back for his plantar facsitis. The meds worked for his heel but he developed canker sores/rash in his mouth that lasted for a few weeks. He read that the meloxicam can cause these sores so he quit taking the meds and has not taken them since. During this episode He went to the dentist and was given Smart Mouthwash and also some steroids, Valacyclovir 500 mg. This helped and the sores went away. Two weeks ago he developed a very strong tightening in his throat making it hard to swallow and he went to the Dr. where he was prescribed Calafate. He does take omeprazole every day for his acid reflux that he's had for years. He's experienced some of this throat tightening over the years but not in the last 5-8 years and never to this extent. He was prescribed Calafate and took it for 4 days but during this time the throat tightening loosened a bit but then he developed a sore throat and sores/rash in his mouth and upper back soft palate. He also had a very stiff neck, a now very sore lower center back (more glandular than muscle) more painful on one side than the other. He quit taking the calafate after 4-5 days because he assumed they were causing the mouth sores that are pretty painful. As of Saturday this week he again taking the valacyclovir and using the mouthwash/rinse that were prescribed for his mouth rash a few months ago. He also has had a dull headache and fatigue. He's not a complainer and has made an appointment at the Dr. for Tuesday. I'm a bit concerned it could be more serious and wondered if we should go to the ER today.

Brief Answer:
GERD may be the cause of symptoms, consider surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

I think the symptoms of neck stiffness, throat narrowing, sores and rash in back of throat and palate may be caused by gastroesophageal reflux he is suffering from.
I don't think the rash and stiffness he is currently having has anything to do with the cancer sores he previously had while using meloxicam.
I think he may need some other drugs to keep GERD under control such Baclofen and esmoprasole.
An esophagogastroscopy is needed to see the conditions of esophageal lining.
He may also consider surgery to find a more reliable solutions and will not be taking so many drugs. Fundiplication procedure can be done when stomach is used to reinforce lower esophageal sphincter. It is minimally invasive procedure done by laparoscopy.
Hope I have answered the question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
