My 7 Year Old Son Is Complaining About Stomach Pain, Headache And Pain In Legs

Suggests bowel infection
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
A sudden onset of fever, headache, stomach pain and loose stools in a child suggests bowel infection or acute gastro enteritis. Most of these are viral, and will settle in 3-5 days of supportive measures. You can do the following measures:
1. Give Paracetamol. This will control fever as well as headache and stomach pain. You can give half of (500 or 650 mg tablet) every 6-8 hours for coming 72 hours. I can give the exact dose if you let me know his body weight.
2. Give plenty of fluids like ORS solution or salted rice water to avoid dehydration. Give in frequent small sips to avoid vomiting. We have to give about 10ml/kg of body weight after each stools. Watch for signs of dehydration(excessive thirst, sunken eyes, infrequent urine, dry mouth). Dehydration might need intravenous fluids.
3. Giving a probiotic will hasten recovery. You can give ECONORM XXXXXXX twice daily for 5 days.
4. Avoid giving fruits/fruit juices now, as these can exacerbate loose stools.
If he is not getting better in 48-72 hours, or if stools become blood stained, we will need antibiotics too.
I hope this answer will help
