Posted on Sun, 24 May 2020
Question: My 89 year old husband swears he has sand in his hair. Every night he showers for a long time trying to remove it. Then he thinks the towels have sand. Also feels like sand in corner of eyes? We argue about it constantly!

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
I need to ask you few questions:
Have you seen sand particles in your husband’s scalp and towel?
Is he having any other ailments?
Is he taking any medicines?
Is he allergic to dust or has history of hay fever, eczema and asthma?
Does he have dandruff in the scalp or he complains of itching and burning in the scalp?

No, I haven’t seen nor felt any sand anywhere in our home or in his hair. He doesn’t have dandruff or any scalp problems either. This just started the past 3 weeks. He isn’t allergic to anything either.
He does have Type II Duabetes which he takes one generic Glimepride daily (Amaryl)
He also has neuropathy & takes 4 Gapenpentin 2 in AM & 2 PM. He takes 1 Atorvastatin(Lipitor) at night for cholesterol. He’s active & works in the yard & is fine until at night.
The only thing he’s had lately is a shadow in his left eye & saw the Opthamologist who gave him a shot & he’ll need 3 more (once per month) for wet Macular Degeneration. He had the right eye done a year ago but his eye sight is failing.

Brief Answer:
Senile pruritus or delusional disorder, start with antihistaminics

Detailed Answer:
According to your complaints he seems to be having either senile pruritus or delusional disorder which could be age related.
I would recommend you to give him antihistaminic like tablet chlorpheniramine maleate 4 mg twice daily ( one in the afternoon and one at night) and tablet loratidine 10 mg once daily in the morning for 2 weeks.
If it doesn’t improve his condition in 2 weeks I would recommend you to consult a doctor and get him evaluated.
