My 9 Year Old Nephew Was Just Diagnosed With Bell’s

Question: My 9 year old nephew was just diagnosed with Bell’s Palsey and just finished a week of antiviral meds and I believe a steroid.
He woke up today with a swollen and painful eye. Gus doctor said that the virus has now spread to his eye.
I’m writing to ask what the recommended course of treatment is and would it be more beneficial for him to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
An ophthalmologist

Detailed Answer:
hey thanks for the question. in Bell’s palsy there can be a viral infection in the eye or an epithelial defect or defect in the superficial layer of the eye. both can cause these symptoms . if the Eye isn’t closing properly we can try taping the eyelid at night . A course of antiviral ointment and artificial tears will help . but dear you need to undergo a microscopic examination first by a doctor and then we can proceed accordingly . hope it helps

Can you explain what a microscopic examination is please?
He has seen a doctor and they also did blood work today and also went to an optometrist.

1. Microscopic examination?
2. Would you recommend an opthalmologist over an optometrist or is either fine. If so, why?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
It is done with a slit lamp

Detailed Answer:
slit lamp is the machine which ophthalmologists have and it’s a microscope and is used to see the eye . it is done with patient sitting at one end and doctor at one . don’t worry it’s painless . as this is as infectious condition and will require long treatment I would recommend an ophthalmologist . hope it helps
