Question: Hi, My Daughter was playing with 1 capsule karvol plus and by mistake she opened the capsule with her teeth.. when I saw she was playing with it and snatched the use capsule.. Her hands was smelling and mouth too. During that we cleaned her hands and did a quick toothbrush to clean her mouth.. it happened 8 hours before , post which she took sound sleep of 5 hours .. Later she woke up for 3 hours and again we made her to sleep.. she was having cold from 3 days and from morning she was coughing little bit... But suddenly she is coughing little more. Currently she is sleeping. Also her oximeter reading is 98 and PRbpm is 107. What should we do now? Also is it due to karvol plus? We have given her Criz M in night..

Brief Answer:
Karvol plus has ingredients like camphor, menthol, etc

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Sorry for a late reply as I was busy with other professional obligations.

Ingredients of Karvol plus include camphor, terpinol, menthol, chlorothymol, eucalyptol. Accidental ingestion os such substances is common in kids and it should be brought to attention of a doctor who is expert in poisonings. Camphor, terpinol and menthol are volatile substances and are meant for inhalation only. Camphor, if ingested, can produce some side effects. It may produce drowsiness or seizures and can be poisonous if taken orally. Since she is sleeping after ingestion, she is having side effects of camphor. I will suggest that you visit a local doctor.
It is good that you cleaned her mouth immediately. With the help of doctor/surgeon, a gastric lavage should be performed within a few hours. Since we may have missed that, I will suggest that you help the child do gargles with clean water plus some salt 2-3 times a day for 1-2 days. Also allow her drink lots of water.
Please see a local doctor (surgeon) who can handle poisonings. Local medical college or multispecialty hospital can be consulted.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
Be careful about medicine

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

Currently we need to observe the child for any drowsiness or other symptoms of camphor poisoning especially of digestion, liver or brain. So avoid any cough and cold medicine that can cause similar symptoms of drowsiness or digestive issues. Such medicines may be antiallergics and antibiotics and these need to be avoided.
I don't see any prescription attached. Please upload it again or send it at YYYY@YYYY and address it to my name: Dr Vaishalee Punj
Regarding omnacortil forte, it contains prednisolone which is a steroid. It is usually prescribed in conditions causing severe inflammation that interferes with breathing and inhalers didn't work well. I don't know what caused your physician to prescribe it. It can cause problems especially if used for more than 10 days. Growth retardation is caused in children when steroid is used for months.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help further.

Regards
Dr Vaishalee

Brief Answer:
Need to avoid these medicines until recovery

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Thanks for reverting back with details.

As per the prescription provided, medicines prescribed are as follows:
31 jan: cloff dry syrup (clarithromycin), tuspel ls (ambroxol, levosalbutamol, guaiphenesin) and ibugesic nm
6 feb: omnicortil forte and noworm syrp given
21st feb: sporidex (cefalexin), XXXXXXX ls (chlorpheniramine and dextromethorphan), bilazap m (bilastine and montelukast) and tonofer (iron and folic acid)

I am assuming that the medicines prescribed on 31 XXXXXXX and 6 feb have been discontinued.
Among medicines prescribed on 21 feb, sporidex is an antibiotic and can cause diarhea as side effect, XXXXXXX ls can cause drowsiness side effect, bilazap m can cause depression, diarhea, tonofer can also cause gastro intestinal side effects. Camphor also causes similar symptoms. If we continue to give these medicines we will be unable to figure out whether drowsiness is due to camphor or the medicines and it will exacerbate the drowsiness as well. In my opinion, currently avoid any medicines for minimum 3 days after camphor ingestion. Some effects of camphor ingestion can continue beyond 4 days, so just carefully watch for any symptoms.

Regards,
Dr Vaishalee
