Question: My PSA has climbed over the last three years from 1.13 to 3.30 and a rectal exam showed a slight firming on the right side. My doctor says I should check it further with a urologist, which I will do. It may be nothing to worry about, but just in case, I wanted to ask what is the latest thinking on treatment for prostate cancer? From back in 1993, my PSA ranged up and down between 0.9 and 1.3.

Brief Answer:
One should not suspect Cancer of Prostate with PSA of 3.3 .

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .
Based on the fact that you have posted the rise in PSA from 1.13 to 3.3 can not be a ground to suspect cancer of prostate .The PSA of 3.3 is still within normal range of below 4 ng .

The firmness of prostate detected on digital rectal examination can be due to Enlarged Prostate which is very common at this age .

Do not think about treatment of cancer of prostate when it is the rarest of rare possibility in your case .

Consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic test to rule out cancer of prostate
1) Urine routine and culture
2) Ultrasound Scanning and Trans Rectal Ultrasound Scanning (TRUS).

He would be the best judge to satisfy and clear off your doubt .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thanks for the helpful input. My doctor was similarly cautious about getting alarmed, so it's nice to have your confirmation. Still, I will get it checked further this fall.
